On 17 June 1808, Henrik Arnold Thaulow Wergeland was born in Kristiansand, Denmark-Norway. He was a famous Norwegian writer, poet, playwright, controversialist, historian and linguist. Wergeland is said to be a pioneer in the development of a distinctive Norwegian literary heritage and modern Norwegian culture. Wergeland lived only 37 years, even in such a short time, Wergeland did great and remarkable work in literature, theology, history, contemporary politics, social issues and science. His ideas were quite controversial, Wergeland's literary style was also condemned as subversive.

Wergeland became established in the field of literature at the age of 21. He enthusiastically carried forward the principles of the French July Revolution of 1830. Kept raising issues of national importance. Established many libraries. Made efforts to reduce the poverty of Norwegian farmers and made the public aware to promote it by adopting a simple life. Condemned foreign luxury. Wergeland made efforts to increase knowledge and greater understanding of the constitutional rights granted to his people. He became increasingly popular among the common people. In his landmark essay Hvi skrider menneskeheden sa långsomt framm? (Why does humanity progress so slowly) Wergeland expressed his belief.

1

Heaven will no longer be divided after the quadriga of altars,

The earth will no longer be divided and plundered by the scepters of the tyrant.

The bloody crowns,

The steel torches of the executioner and the pyres of sacrifice

Will no longer shine on the earth.

Through the gloom of priests,

Through the thunder of kings,

The dawn of freedom,

The bright day of truth shines on the sky,

Now a temple roof, and descends to the earth,

Which now turns into an altar for brotherly love.

Earthly spirits now shine in fresh hearts.

Freedom is the heart of the soul, truth is the will of the soul.

Earthly spirits will all fall to the dust and call forth the eternal

Each bears his heavenly throne on his forehead.

Each bears his altar and vessel of sacrifice in his heart.

God is all on earth,

Priests are all for God.

2

Come to me, sorrow, press upon my bosom,

Lest it burst with excess of joy.

Heaven, with its calamity, hell, with its pain,

Quiet its tumult. Here for a while

3

The crowned, lofty descendant of the fir-tree

From which the Gothic architect's design drew grace and strength

For churches planned in the magnificent style

The army of truth

Words? Sounds which the world hates.

Words in poems?

Even more despised!

Ah, how feeble are your powers to defend all truth rejected by man!

Thunder and lightning blaze before it!

From heaven armies of angels descend to the rescue

To spread the knowledge of its glory far and wide.

Oh, why cannot it fly from on high?

Truth, which is a star-born

Wears a shining helmet

Instead of wings

Wields sharp swords.

Oh, why then does it not pitch tents on every mountain white tent?

Oh, why then are not its heroes strongly posted

To maintain dominion over life?

The fortress of darkness is well secured.

Superstition is secure on pillars of stone.

Around the temple of Truth are posted the black-robed guards of delusion

Like the serpents of Egypt.

Go forth, however, you feeble lines!

The Word is legion!

Your victory on this earth

Was promised by God, the Father of Light,

When you serve Truth, which is His child, alone.

Go forth, Word, you sons of Truth! At last the hearts of men

Will be your triumphant hope.

Then your light

Will boldly lead them forth.

Go forth, with your bravest faces

The word of truth!

For the greatest power on earth

Has been given to you by God:

For you can never die in the pure face of truth!

So all you little people, take courage!

The great cause of truth

Triumphs only in defeat.

Attack the bitter heights of falsehood!

Blow them to the ground with truth!
