Edgar Lawrence Doctorow Quotes - Complex, serious, inspiring, interesting, poignant thoughts of the celebrated American novelist, editor and professor

Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, a celebrated American novelist, editor and professor, died on July 21, 2015 in New York City, USA at the age of 84. He was particularly known and admired for his historical fiction. He wrote twelve novels, three volumes of short stories and a stage play, including the award-winning novels Ragtime (1975), Billy Bathgate (1989) and The March (2005). Many of Edgar Lawrence Doctorow's works placed fictional characters in recognizable historical contexts alongside known historical characters and often used different narrative styles. His stories were recognized for their originality and versatility and Doctorow was praised for his boldness and imagination. Several of Doctorow's novels and short stories were adapted for television and movie screens. Ragtime was made into a film (1981) and a Broadway musical of the same name (1998) that won four Tony Awards. Doctorow's book editor Jason Epstein has commented, When you read Edgar's manuscripts, it was done. He was such a writer, he got everything right the first time. I don't think we had any editorial problems. Not even remotely. None at all. According to John Brookes, Edgar Lawrence Doctorow needed a great deal of research to create stories based on real events and real characters. Critic John Brookes notes that they were nevertheless so vivid that there was never the smell of research in old newspaper files that they required. Doctorow demonstrated in most of his novels that the past is very vivid, but it is not easily accessible. We tell and retell stories, Parini writes, and these stories illuminate our daily lives. He showed us again and again that our past is our present, and that those unwilling to grapple with what has happened will be condemned to repeat its worst mistakes where reporters are not constrained by the interests of the local Chamber of Commerce. Here are some of Edgar Lawrence Doctorow's complex, profound, inspiring, interesting, poignant thoughts.

But the boy's eyes saw only the tracks made by skaters, the marks of moments past, journeys made.

At these days in our history there was a highly developed system of inter-urban street railway lines. One could travel long distances on hard rush seats or wooden benches by taking each line at its terminus and transferring to the next.

Tracks! Tracks! It seemed to the visionaries writing for the popular magazines that the future lay at the end of parallel rails. There were long-distance locomotive railroads and inter-urban electric railroads and street railroads and elevated railroads, all laying their steel strips on the ground, like the textures of a relentless civilization. Boston and New York even had railroads under the streets, new rapid-transit subway systems that carried thousands of people every day.

Suppose I can prove to you that there are universal patterns of order and repetition that give meaning to the activity of this planet. Suppose I can demonstrate that you yourself are a tool in the trends of our modern age.

For a moment he thought the chair was aligned but then he decided it was not. He gave it another turn to the right. He now tried to sit in the chair but it still felt awkward. He turned it again. Eventually he made a full turn and still he could not find the proper alignment for the chair.

Life forms were unstable and everything in the world could easily become something else.

Goldman sent Evelyn a letter saying, I am often asked the question how the general public can allow itself to be exploited by a few. The answer is by being persuaded to identify with them.

With your picture in his newspaper the laborer goes home to his wife, a tired working mare with veins bulging in her legs, and dreams not of justice but of getting rich.

Somehow he had transported himself beyond the world's value system. But this very fact put on him a great responsibility for maintaining other people's illusions.

That is why the personality can be compared to a pyramid in which it is attainable only by the place of the top stone... Jews, said Ford. They are not like any other people I know. There your theory is going down the drain. He smiled.

It is the law of money that such people profit only by the wealth that is taken from them.

Poor father, I see his final quest. He reaches the new place, his hair standing up in surprise, his mouth and eyes shut. His foot scrapes a soft storm of sand, he kneels and spreads his arms in pantomimic celebration, the immigrant, as at every moment of his life, forever reaching his own shore.

For Morgan the mutilation of his monstrous nose was the touch of God upon him, the assurance of death. It was the most lasting assurance for him.

And though the newspapers called the shooting the crime of the century, Goldman knew it was only 1906 and there were ninety-four years to go.

I am often asked the question how the masses can allow themselves to be exploited by a few. The answer is that they are being persuaded to identify with them.

It was clear to them that the world constantly creates and recreates itself in an endless process of discontent.

We are all good friends. Friendship is what lasts. Shared ideals, respect for the whole character of a human being.

Because like all prostitutes you value manners. You are a creature of capitalism, whose morals are so corrupt and hypocritical that your beauty is nothing more than the beauty of gold, which can be called false, cold and worthless.

Writing is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole journey that way.
