John Bannister Goodenough was born on 25 July 1922 in Jena, Thuringia, German Reich. Goodenough became a well-known and extremely important American materials scientist, solid-state physicist and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. Since 1986 John Bannister Goodenough was a professor of materials science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Goodenough is known for identifying the Goodenough-Kanamori rules of the sign of magnetic superexchange in materials, developing materials for computer random-access memory and inventing the cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. Goodenough was awarded the National Medal of Science, the Copley Medal, the Fermi Prize, the Draper Prize, and the Japan Prize. In 2019, Goodenough was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. At age 97, Goodenough became the oldest Nobel laureate in history.
