Björnstjern Martinius Björnsson (died April 26, 1910 in Paris, France) was a renowned Norwegian writer who received 190 awards. The third Nobel Prize in Literature came as a tribute to his great, brilliant and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its feeling. Björnsson was the first Norwegian Nobel laureate, a prominent polemicist, and a highly influential figure in Norwegian public life and Scandinavian cultural debate. He was born on 8 December 1832 in Kvikne, Norway.
Björnsson published the first of his peasant novels, Synov Solbakken, in 1857. followed by Arne in 1858, En glade gut (A Happy Boy) in 1860, and Fiskargenten (The Fisher Girl) in 1868. These are the most important works of his bonded farmer stories. Björnsson influenced even the established ones so much that at least seven Danish composers, including Morten Esksen, C.J. Friedensberg, Peter Heij, Anton Nielsen, Oluf Ring, Henrik Rung and Sigrid Henriette Wieneke etc. composed music based on Arne.
