Some thoughtful, inspirational, entertaining, motivational, encouraging statements by philosopher, psychologist, biologist, sociologist and anthropologist Herbert Spencer

Herbert Spencer was born on 27 April 1820 in Derby, United Kingdom. Herbert Spencer was an English polymath who worked as a philosopher, psychologist, biologist, sociologist and anthropologist. Spencer originated the expression survival of the fittest, which he coined in Principles of Biology after reading Charles Darwin's 1859 book On the Origin of Species. This survival of the fittest, he said, which I have here attempted to express in mechanical terms, is what Mr. Darwin called natural selection, or the preservation of favored races in the struggle for life. Herbert Spencer died on 8 December 1903 in Brighton, Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom, at the age of 83. He gave a different vision to the world. Here are some thoughtful, inspirational, entertaining, motivational, encouraging statements of Herbert Spencer.

In the course of social development, usage precedes law, and when usage is well established it becomes law by receiving official support and defined form.

Time: That which man always tries to kill, but which ends up killing him.

Consummate patients, whose lungs are incapable of performing their duties, people with defective hearts which collapse due to excitement of the circulation, people with any constitutional defect which prevents the proper fulfillment of the conditions of life, are constantly dying and Leaving behind those who are suitable for it. The climate, food and habits with which they are born...and thus the caste is kept free from deformity.

No one can be completely happy unless everyone is happy.

Crime is incurable except in the gradual process of adaptation to the social situation through which humanity is undergoing. Crime is the continual growing out of the old unadapted nature – the index of a character unfit for its circumstances – and the faster the unfitness is reduced the less crime can be.

Along with the increasing power of a growing administrative organization also decreases the power of the rest of the society to oppose its further development and control.

And yet, it is strange to say, now that the truth of natural selection has been recognized by most cultured peoples, now more than ever in the history of the world, will they make every possible effort to further the existence of the unfit. Are you?

Survival of the fittest means multiplication of the fittest.

The aim of education is to build character.

Evolution is the unification of matter and the concomitant dissipation of motion, during which matter passes from an indefinite incoherent uniformity into a definite coherent variety, and during which the retained motion undergoes a parallel change.

Science is organized knowledge.

Love is the end of life, but it never ends. Love is the wealth of life, never spent, but always spent. The reward of love life, reward in reward.

Those who indirectly use force are as responsible for that force as if they had used it themselves.

When a person's knowledge is not organized, the more knowledge he has, the greater his confusion.

We often forget that not only bad things have the spirit of good, but even things that are generally wrong have the spirit of truth.

No man is equal to his book. All the best products of his mental activity go into his book, where they are separated from the mass of inferior products with which they mingle in his daily conversation.

Preservation of health is a duty. Very few people seem to be conscious that there is such a thing as physical morality.

Whatever promotes militarism leads to barbarism. Whatever promotes peace leads to civilization.

Be courageous, be courageous, and be courageous everywhere.

The end result of protecting humans from the influence of foolishness is to fill the world with fools.

Never teach a child to be just a gentleman or a lady, but to be a man, a lady.

How often misuse of words gives rise to misleading ideas.

Every cause produces more than one effect.
