Emily Elizabeth Dickinson died on May 15, 1886 in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA. He was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily was a famous American poet of her time. After studying at Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she briefly attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family home in Amherst. Evidence suggests that Dickinson lived much of her life in isolation. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a fondness for white clothing and was known for her reluctance to receive guests or even leave her bedroom in later life. Dickinson never married, and most of her friendships were based entirely on correspondence.
Dickinson wrote a lot. But his only publications during his lifetime were 10 of his approximately 1,800 poems and a letter. Poems published then were generally edited to conform to traditional poetic rules. His poems were unique for their era, consisting of short lines, usually lacking headings, and often using oblique rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Many of his poems deal with the themes of death and immortality (two recurring themes in his letters to his friends), aesthetics, society, nature, and spirituality. Here are some poetry excerpts, thoughts, quotes of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson.
hope is a thing with wings
she resides in the soul
And sings the tune without words
And never stops.
If I can prevent one heart from breaking then my life will not have been in vain.
It will never come again, that's what makes life so sweet.
Don't know when morning will come
I open every door.
A little spring madness is good for the king, too.
This is my letter to the world
He never wrote to me.
If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold that no fire can warm me, I know that is poetry. If I physically feel as if the top of my head has been taken off, I know that's poetry. These are the only ways I know of. Is there any other way?
The morning without you is a dull morning.
I'm nothing! Who are you?
Are you also nobody?
Then there's a pair of us, don't tell!
They'll deport us, you know.
How dull it is to be someone!
How public, like a frog
A day of a lifetime to tell your name
To a praiseworthy swamp!
Living is so amazing that it leaves little time for anything else.
Bring me a sunset in a cup.
Forgive my sanity in this crazy world.
Beauty is not born, it is.
I don't know anything in the world that has as much power as a word. Sometimes I write something and just look at it until it starts to shine.
I'm out with a lantern, looking for myself.
The soul should always be ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.
Dogs are better than humans because they know but don't tell.
The heart wants what it wants – otherwise it doesn't care.
Truth is so rare that it is a pleasure to tell it.
Cherish your parents because without them this world is scary and confusing.
The most beloved of time, the strongest friend of the soul – books.
