Quotes by Jack Steinberger - Some interesting, inspiring, thoughtful quotes from the German-American physicist who won the Nobel Prize
Jack Steinberger was born on May 25, 1921, in Bad Kissingen, Germany (birth name Hans Jakob Steinberger). Jack Steinberger was a German-American physicist known for his research on neutrinos. Jack Steinberger became the recipient of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Leon M. Lederman and Melvin Schwartz, for the discovery of the muon neutrino. During his career as an experimental particle physicist he held important positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University and CERN. He was the recipient of the United States National Medal of Science in 1988 and the Matteucci Medal from the Italian Academy of Sciences in 1990.
In 1988 Jack Steinberger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his demonstration of the dual structure of the lepton through the neutrino beam method and the discovery of the muon neutrino. He shared the award with Leon M. Lederman and Melvin Schwartz. At the time of the research, all three experimenters were working on the same project at Columbia University. The experiment used a charged pion beam generated with the alternating gradient synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The pions decayed into muons which were found in front of a steel wall. Neutrinos were detected in spark chambers installed behind the wall. The combination of muon and neutrino revealed that another type of neutrino was created in collaboration with muon. Later experiments proved this neutrino to be different from the first type (electron-type). Steinberger, Lederman, and Schwartz published their research in Physical Review Letters in 1962. He donated his Nobel Medal to New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois (USA), of which he was an alumnus. Jack Steinberger was awarded the National Medal of Science by US President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Received the Matteucci Medal from the Italian Academy of Sciences in 1990. Here are some interesting, inspiring, thought-provoking quotes by Jack Steinberger.
I've become a bit anti-Semitic now since my last visit to synagogue, but my atheism does not necessarily negate religion.
I had no new ideas on the physics we could learn and I could not compete with the younger generation. I feel that I have learned as much from fellow students as well as professors.
I think we should not be interested in awards, we should be interested in learning about nature.
You only have one life. Whatever grows, grows.
The problem of transmitting scientific knowledge is an extremely difficult task.
