Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen died on 13 May 1930 in Polhögda, Lysaker, Norway, aged 68. Nansen was a Norwegian polymath and Nobel Peace Prize winner. He gained fame in his life as an explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian on diverse matters and co-founded the Fatherland League. Nansen led the team that first crossed the interior of Greenland in 1888, crossing the island on cross-country skis. He gained international fame after reaching the record north latitude of 86°14′ during his Fram expedition of 1893–1896. Although he retired from exploration after returning to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. In 1897 he was elected an International Member of the American Philosophical Society.
