Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day Kolkata, West Bengal), a Bengali polymath and the main poet, writer, playwright, musician, philosopher, social reformer and painter of the Bengal Renaissance. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with contemporary modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He gained world fame for his poetic composition Gitanjali. Became the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Tagore's poetic songs are considered spiritual and melodious. He was a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society as the Bard of Bengal. Tagore is also known by the nicknames Gurudeb, Kobiguru, and Biswokobi, World Poet, Kavindra.
Born to an affluent Bengali Brahmin in Calcutta, Tagore wrote poetry at the age of 8. At the age of 16, Tagore released his first significant poems under the pseudonym Bhanusingh. By 1877 he published his first short stories and plays, published under his real name. As a humanist, universalist, internationalist, and strong critic of nationalism, he condemned the British Raj and advocated independence from Britain. As an exponent of the Bengal Renaissance he put forward a vast canon that included paintings, sketches and doodles, hundreds of treatises and nearly two thousand songs. He established Visva-Bharati University.
Tagore modernized Bengali art by abandoning rigid classical forms and opposing linguistic strictness. Her novels, stories, songs, dance dramas and essays touched upon a wide range of political and personal topics. Gitanjali (Song Presentations), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Byre (The Home and the World) are his most famous works, and his poetry, short stories and novels are highly appreciated for their lyrical style, colloquial though Some criticized him. His compositions were chosen as national anthems by two countries, India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla. The national anthem of Sri Lanka is also said to be inspired by him. His song Banglar Mati Banglar Jol i.e. Soil of Bengal, Water of Bengal has been adopted as the state anthem of West Bengal.
